    Tamilnadu Livestock Development Agency is an autonomous body registered under registration of societies act and it is the state Implementation agency of the National Project on Cattle and Buffalo Breeding functioning from 9.01.2003

  4. What are the activities of the agency?
    The Activities of the agencies are facilitating the following:
    1. Facilitating the production of quality bovine semen.
    2. Ensuring availability of quality artificial insemination Inputs i.e., frozen semen straws at the AI centers and at the doorstep of the farmers.
    3. Streamlining and ensuring uninterrupted supply of liquid nitrogen and frozen semen straws to all artificial insemination centers.
    4. Making available artificial insemination facilities at the doorstep of farmers by training local rural youth in artificial insemination,
    5. Increasing the artificial Insemination coverage and conception rates of breedable cattle and buffalo.
    7. Conservation of indigenous breeds of cattle viz.,Umbalacheri ,Kangeyam etc.,
    8. Implementing bull production programme through field performance recording.
  5. Who is funding the Agency?
    The Government of India's ‘National Project on Cattle and Buffalo Breeding’ funds the project components as 100 % grant in aid. The establishment cost of the Agency is to be met by becoming self sustainable by charging for the services rendered.

    Cattle
    Exotic Breeds: Jersey, Holstein Friesian
    Crossbred: Jersey cross, Holstein Friesian cross.
    Indigenous breeds: Sindhi, Umbalacheri, Kangeyam.
    Buffalo: Murrah.
  7. Where are the Frozen Semen Straws produced in Tamil Nadu?
    Frozen semen straws are produced at the following farms of the Department of Animal Husbandry
    District Livestock Farm Hosur, Krishnagiri district.
    Exotic Cattle Breeding Farm, Eachenkottai, Thanjavur district.
    District Livestock Farm, Ooty, The Nilgiris district and
    at the Nucleus Jersey and Stud Farm, Ooty, The Nilgiris District of the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited.

    b.The local veterinary sub centers, Dairy cooperative Societies or private AI Worker
    c. Office of the Deputy Directors (AH) of local Cattle Breeding and Fodder Development units,
    d. Office of the Regional Joint Director of Animal Husbandry or
    e. Office of the Chief Executive Officer of Tamil Nadu Livestock development Agency, Chennai.
  9. Which breed’s semen is suitable for our region?
    Insist on inseminating your cow with Semen from Jersey Bulls if you live in plains and your cow is of jersey breed or nondescript and if not available use semen from Sindhi bulls.
    Inseminate Your cow with Holstein Friesian bull Semen if you are living in a hilly tract and your cow is of Holstein Friesian breed or nondescript and if not available, use semen from Sindhi bulls.
    For crossbred cows, use semen of respective crossbreds or use semen from Sindhi bulls.
    For Buffaloes, inseminate with Semen of Murrah breed bulls.
    The FSS are also available for Kangeyam and Umbalachery cattle in their native tracts.
  10. Why is artificial insemination superior?
    The frozen semen straws are produced with semen from bulls having high genetic potential, high fertility and free from diseases (genetic and Infectious) and leads to increased productivity of offspring. Artificial insemination prevents propagation of unknown and inferior genetic material with low productivity and transmission of diseases by the practice of natural service.

    Contact your local Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, Veterinary Surgeon, livestock inspectors, private AI workers or Dairy Cooperative societies in the villages.
  13. How to increase the productivity of my livestock?
    The productivity of the livestock can be increased by periodic deworming, periodic vaccination, providing clean good quality drinking water, well balanced feed, green fodder, and breeding at appropriate time as per the advice of the Veterinarians.
  14. What is the Charge for Artificial Insemination with sex sorted semen doses?
    The charges for first insemination with sex sorted semen is Rs.175/- and if it does not conceive in the first insemination the second AI is charged Rs.150/-
